THE 2010
WILDERNESS VOYAGEURS UPSTREAM WORLD
CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Upstream race: it makes
grown men cry, sweat, puke and worry that they have to do it again next year.
The rules for the race are simple: start when you hear the word "go," turn
around at the double rock in the pool at the mouth of Cucumber Run, and head
back to the put-in beach. First one wins. Oh yeah, no walking allowed! The race
is part lactic burn and part strategy.
This event, which has been
held on the Yough in one form or another for about the last twenty years, will
take place on Saturday, August 28, around 6:15 PM. (In contrast with past years,
this is not the same day as the Falls Race. This is because the Falls
Festival was up in the air until very close to the "due date.") The race is
a mass start. The starting line is the gauge at the put-in; the turnaround
points are the twin rocks located in the center of the pool at the bottom of
Entrance Rapid, and the finish line is the starting line–the put-in gauge.
Typical winning times for wildwater boats are 8 minutes; winning times for the
"other boat" class are about 10 minutes. The last racer usually crosses the
finish line 25-30 minutes after the race start. We will have pre-registration
and registration the day of the event. Registration will be free if you also
registered for the Falls event.
Eric Martin of Wilderness Voyageurs will once
again be sponsoring and coordinating this event. Wilderness Voyageurs will also
be providing prizes. For more information contact Eric at 800-272-4141 or eric@wilderness-voyageurs.com.
This
is a very entertaining event, which will also attract a lot of spectators along
the river.
